CROSSROADS (A sonnet for my cousin, with love)

Psalm 139:16. … all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

James E. Powers, Jr.
September 23, 1952 - November 19, 2010

He stands between the living and the dead,
as ailing lungs no longer understand
the expectations of a heart in dread,
not willing to let go of all it planned.

Though comatose, his mind exerts its will,
Not giving up, nor knowing how to cope;
As loved ones, keeping vigilant, instill
An ember of illuminating hope.

Sad we cannot return to days of old,
Of playing ‘til the streetlights called us home;
Now, heart-in-throat, we watch events unfold;
Our desperate pens add chapters to his tome.

Yet, God imparts His own life-giving breath,
to give eternal life that transcends death.

Marie Elena
"...  just around the corner from the light of day"  The Boss

You lost the battle to breathe earth's air this morning, but gained eternal, celestial air.  You are loved, and always will be.  See you on the other side, Punk.

  1. A beautiful tribute, Marie. Sorry for the temporary pain of loss - but rejoicing that you will see him again one day!

  2. Sorry to hear about Jim, Marie. You and your family have been through a lot of late, and God's good grace remains in your favor. It's we who are suffering now with his loss. But he has gained in the Lord's eyes. Prayers and love for all of you.

  3. Absolutely breath-taking poem, Marie. I am so sorry for your loss, yet glad you are able to express your emotions in such a lovely testimonial to your cousin.

    Hugs~ Laurie Kolp

  4. Beautiful piece, Marie. Sending tons of hugs your way. :(

  5. So sad to hear about your loss, Marie Elena.
    Your words from the heart are a tribute to one so special!
    Take care, ME.

  6. I'm so sorry. These are wonderful poems--this one and the earlier one--and make a lovely tribute. But, oh, I'm sorry that you must grieve again, and still.

    I hope you find some joy, too, in your day.

  7. All of your loving comments have touched my heart. Thank you!

    Marie Elena

  8. Oh Marie. Your poem is heart-breaking-ly beautiful. Jim is at peace now. May comfort and love surround you.

  9. I love you, Boo!

    Thank you, Toyin, for your kind words. I truly appreciate it.

    Marie Elena

  10. Marie, I don't comment often here. Sometimes things hit too close to home. I pray that you find solace, strength, and joy. Your path has been bumpy, but time smoothes it with later memory. Hang in there.

  11. Marie, I'm so saddened to see you going through yet more heartache. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. May God smile upon you and your family. Missing you...

  12. Shauna and Clauds, your visit and friendship mean the world to me. Bless your hearts.

    Marie Elena

  13. Condolences again. And that is a powerful sonnet. {hint, hint}
    - Colette

  14. Colette: Thanks so much for all your kind and encouraging comments out here. I means so much! I got the hint, and entered this at P.A. Hoping to see a sonnet or two from you out there as well. :0)

  15. Lovely thoughts, lovely sonnet. You have managed to find words at a time when they would have failed most people. Condoleances in your loss.

  16. Sending loving support, Marie. Beautiful poem.
